Feeling the Runner’s High and the weekly workout recap

For the first time in a few weeks I’m really feeling confident in my abilities for the 5K race at the end of April. After getting sick in February, then dealing snow and a drop in temperatures it’s been tough getting back into the swing of things with consistency and more miles.

Finally this week I felt a feeling I hadn’t felt in a long time. It was the desire to run more miles. Not just because my plan said I needed to, but because I wanted to just run. On those days when it’s hard and I don’t want to get out of bed, or I just don’t feel like bundling up to go run I do it anyway (most times, sometimes I do continue to just lay in bed). I do it because I know this desire to run is in me somewhere. Even if I don’t feel it at that time I’ve felt it before and I knew it would routine.

For the last year I’ve been going through the motions with workouts and running trying to find the right balance, knowing I want to run and train, but just not feeling it 100%. It wasn’t until Friday morning that I felt it again. It was finally back – the Runner’s High!!!  All those mornings of trudging out the door were worth it!! This one run was a reminder of why I enjoy running so much. It may not be there next week, but it’s there now and I know it will be back again.

When these moments happen for you, when you feel positive and happy about your workout (no matter what you did), keep a hold of that feeling and go back to it on those days when you just want to sleep a little bit longer. Use those moments as motivation to get up and get going because the more you exercise, the more you will feel it, the more you feel it, the better your workouts!

You need to, at some point, enjoy your workouts, because if you don’t love them (most days) you will not be consistent. You know how some foods are an acquired taste? Well consider exercise a acquired activity. The more you do it, the better you will get and the happier you will feel.

With all that being said, here’s what my week in workouts looked like:

Monday – Strength video – this was another of my own workout videos. It’s been a few weeks of me doing my own workout videos and it’s still weird, but I’m learning a lot about my videos to improve for the future. I’m also learning that I like working out to videos because it keeps me on track, I just don’t like the same videos over and over again, lol.

Tuesday – 4 miles easy with average pace of 9:27. Schedule was for speedwork, but after the last few weeks of laying low with mileage I’ve decided to work on building up my running base a bit and not worrying too much about speedwork.

Wednesday – Completely took the day off 🙂

Thursday – 3 miles easy with an average pace of 8:21.

Friday – 5.25 miles with an average pace of 8:12. This was a surprise run as I planned to just do 2 miles after dropping my car off for an oil change. I was feeling good and decided to take a different route, and ended up with over 5 miles, but it just felt so good I didn’t mind at all.

Saturday – Strength workout – I was a bit sore after the run so I opted for a mostly upper body workout that involved heavy weights and finished up with some core work at the end.

Sunday – Barre3 online.  Never made it off the waitlist for the in-studio class so just pressed play online!

Have you ever felt that desire to run or exercise? What were you doing?
